The Best Love Stories

Necklace

Once upon a time, there was a broken girl trying to recover from a destructive relationship. She’d decided that it was better to be alone than be with the wrong guy. Every day, she prayed that she’d have the strength to be alone because being with another wrong guy might kill her. Days passed, and her body started to heal, but her soul still felt broken.

Unbeknownst to her, there was a geeky guy…who really didn’t care for being alone…who’d run into the broken girl again and again though they didn’t know it at the time. Once, years earlier, she’d been dressed as a big purple dinosaur, and he’d been curious who was in the dinosaur costume. Another time, he’d been dressed as a grim reaper, and she’d been dressed as a cat–and he’d nearly asked the hot cat to dance. Some people are meant to be together–once they’re not dressed as weird or creepy creatures (though the cat costume had been totally sexy.)

Because they were meant to be…

After a month of crying and crying and trying so hard to be alone and happy, the broken girl saw the geeky guy and said to her sister, “See that blonde guy. I really like him. He’s funny. He makes me laugh.” So, she conned the geeky guy into hanging out with her, and they ended up staying up all night talking in a car about everything and nothing. And when he kissed her in the wee hours of the morning, the broken girl thought, “This is the man I’m going to marry.”

They both went in to work on very little sleep, but the girl told everyone she knew that she’d met the man she was going to marry. Within days, she’d told him that too, and he agreed–which was good. And they spent nearly every day together up until they got married five months later.

Sometimes they still stay up late talking about everything and nothing at all–though usually he conks out at 10 p.m. because he’s an early bird, and she’s a night owl. Sometimes, she still gets broken and needs his help to put herself back together. He still makes her laugh. She’s still the one he wants to be with.

Because  we were meant to be.

Sometimes, the best love stories have the most subtle sort of magic–two people finding each other in this crowded world and loving each other because of their imperfections. Sometimes, they involve doctor’s appointments that shatter them, money problems, a crushing mortgage, migraines, potty-training, gallbladder surgery, a Karmann Ghia, Autism, OCD, a husky/lab that only listens to alphas, two kids…and being apart for the first time in sixteen years on the anniversary of that first night due to a funeral.

And those are the best sort of love stories because they’re true and if you can believe in something as impossible as eternal love then the rest of the magic you’d like to believe in seems a bit more attainable. The world seems a bit brighter when you think that a girl who once was a purple dinosaur hooked up with a guy who once was a grim reaper…though not at the same time–because that’d be weird.

Some things were meant to be and to last forever.

(The picture is of a necklace my husband gave me our first anniversary. It’s my favorite necklace in the world. I once thought I’d lost it and when I found it, I cried…because I’m such a girl. Oh, and that’s my freckled neck.)

The real ones ARE the best. It’s tough being away from the one you love on special days. Hope your week gets better.

  2. Yes, the real ones are the best because you never reach the last page; they’re forever. Happy anniversary, Wendy. 🙂

Awww. I remember when he met you. You are pretty perfect for each other. I’m sorry that you have to be apart for this anniversary. *hug*

    • I still remember you saying of my husband that you couldn’t really imagine someone who’d be perfect for him until you met me. You also said, “You knew what you were getting into, Wendy, you’d seen his room.” LOL. I still think of that when I’m cleaning up things. Someone who hates cleaning isn’t entirely well matched with someone of the same mindset. Anyway, those are the two bits of wisdom I’ve remembered from our early years. It’s hard to believe it’s been sixteen years, huh? Gah! We’re old. *goes to buy walker* NO! *goes to buy Rascal scooter*
